Today we cleaned up the site because Mr. Thames is going to have an open house tonight. We also began preparations for shutting down the site such as removing stakes and weeds. The class overall was very educational and still just as fun the second time around.

Today was once again extremely hot outside. We are so close to finishing, we have about half of the floor uncovered. We discover a grenadircular pot only a few inches away from the floor. It has a redish orangish color to it and was uncovered by Brant. Also on Tuesday I forgot to mention, we uncovered another Juvenile skeleton.

Today was extremely hot. We worked on our square and began to uncover the floor. The floor is a dark grey and very uneven. This house was definitely of 1st century and possibly a servants home or just a poorer family.

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Today was extremely hot. We did get quite a bit of work done however. At fruit break we had popsicles instead which was a delightful treat. We did not find anything today too exciting.

Tuesday, May 5, 2009

We were unable to work in the field today because the site was still to damp to do any effective work. We just surveyed the site to see if any new artifacts had been unearthed. One observation of the site was that many of the balks had completely collapsed.

Today was a busy day. We uncovered artifact after artifact. I believe the final count was five. First we found a pot in the baulk on the south side of our square. Then we found another pot in the left corner. Then in front of those was a small cup. Lastly directly in front of that was a big wooden bowl and spoon. All in all we accomplished a lot today and are almost down with the square.

Pictures are not yet updated.

Today we worked on cleaning material culture. The other team worked on cleaning and putting back together a shattered pot. My team worked on a plaster plaque that was really dirty and also shattered into many different pages. We have successfully cleaned and put together about 50%.

Today was an extremely hot day. I was very worn out by the end of the dig. Our main task today was to look for mud brick which was assumed to be right around the area we were working according to the square directly next to us. Unfortunately we did not find any mud brick. The other square was able to uncover a pot in their new square.

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

On Tuesday we continued to dig in our square. We were able to move quite a bit of dirt. My team was concentrating on finding some mud brick that we hypothesized would be in the layer we were about to dig through but we were unable to find any. We did not find anything significant today. It was a really nice day however.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Today we continued to work in our square. The other team worked on a baulk that they had began tearing down yesterday. My team worked well but did not find anything too exciting.

Monday, March 30, 2009

On Monday we spent the class working on our final projects. It was a quite day without any digging. The next dig day is going to be spent repairing the site because of rain damage.

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

On Wednesday we were stuck inside due to rain the previous night. We began to clean artifacts that we recovered previously. The other team finished cleaning the skeletons and also glued back on one of the babies fingers that was chopped off by a pick axe. My team worked on a plaster 3D art piece that was very frail and required a gentle touch.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

On Tuesday we began to fix up some previous squares because they were damaged by a rainstorm. We also prepared the squares for more rain to come by putting tarps up to cover the squares. It was quite muddy and slow working.

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Today my team worked on articulating a plaster mural that was broken into many pieces. We discovered it last Friday but extricated it on Tuesday. It is very delicate and quite difficult to clean. The other team helped clean our skeletons while we were cleaning our piece.

Monday, March 9, 2009

Today we worked on cleaning the skeletons. We also had to take measurements of the different bones in order to determine gender and age. We were only able to clean 2 major bones.

Friday, March 6, 2009

On Friday we were mainly working in the new square which is located next to the other team in a corner. The last thing we had to do in the previous square was to remove the skeletons to the classroom fro closer observation and measurements on Monday. We were able to move a good amount of dirt in the new square.

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

On Wednesday my team's main focus was to finish leveling off our entire square. This was one of the lasts steps to closing out our current sqaure and moving on to the new one. The longest part was articulating the skeletons because we were not able to move them to get dirt out of the way.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

On Wednsday I was not in class because I was taking a test.

Monday, February 23, 2009

On Monday my team went out to the site to remove the tarps from the squares so that they could dry and be ready to dig on Tuesday. We determined we would be able to dig in all the squares but one because it was still damp. The other team stayed in the classroom and began piecing back a shattered pot.

Friday, February 20, 2009

Today my team was unable to work in our square because the floor of our square was moist. We started marking off our new square which is located directly next to the other teams square. We also relocated a shed to another side of the field.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

Today I was absent from class because I had to renew my license at the DPS office. The class was unable to work outside anyways due to wet conditions.

Friday, February 13, 2009

After slight rain most of the week and our square being covered by a tarp, we still got a puddle of water in our square due to water seeping through he tarp. We were unable to work in the majority of out square because of it. We did as much as we could with the circumstances but didn't get far.

Monday, February 9, 2009

Today I handed over the leader duties to my fellow teammate. We cleaned many pieces of concrete that we uncovered the week prior. The other team cleaned quite a few pottery fragments.

Friday, February 6, 2009

Today is my last day being the team leader. I will be handing over the command to Brian D. We worked pretty well today. We articulated more of the skeleton and re-stacked the wall on our southern side of the square. My team worked very well at following directions during the course of my team command.

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

Today my teams soul goal was to articulate the two skeletons in our square. We discovered that the adult skeleton may be inside our baulk. Meaning that later down the road we may have to tear down our baulk to uncover the rest of the skeleton. We worked very well today even though we had some minor distractions.

Friday, January 30, 2009

Today my teams main goal was to move a lot of dirt. We began pick-axing the western side after we started moving the dirt away we discovered another skeleton adjacent to the pre-existing one. We are presuming that the skeleton we have just discovered considering its bones being much smaller than the original that it is the child of the pre-existing skeleton. We have not concluded whether the pre-existing skeleton is male or female. Unfortunately during the dirt removal a finger was severed from the new skeleton we found one of them through careful sifting but have yet to find the other.

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

I was not in class due to being at the Sam Houston College library with my english class.

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Today we continued to move dirt out of the square. We were much more efficient than the first day. We first had a high on the northern side of the square. My team worked pretty well. Unfortunately there were no significant finds.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Today we went out to the field and went over some more of the basics. We broke up into teams and I am the leader of Alpha team. We began to work and moved a few buckets of dirt. We found no significant finds.

Friday, January 16, 2009

Today we went over the fundamentals of elevations on a dig site. We were taught how to do a top sheet. We learned how to find the height of instrument and what the benchmark is.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Today we took off the tarps that was protecting the square while were were on break. Mr. Thames the teacher also taught the new students the fundamentals of a dig site. At one point we had to get seven people around a tarp that was covering a sqaure, it was filled with lots of water, and we dumped it out over the edge.
